Content Analysis of Campaign Speeches

To explore campaign messages more systematically, the analysis draws on 117 hours of recordings obtained from rallies held by the two main parties, PNU and ODM. Because the parties spent the vast majority of their time on the campaign trail in areas primarily inhabited by ethnic groups that did not have a coethnic candidate in the presidential race, most recordings were obtained from swing regions. Comparing the distribution of recordings to the data on the location of campaign rallies from the previous chapter indicates a reasonably good correspondence between the two. Table 5.1 compares the share of recordings collected from core coethnic areas and swing areas with the share of presidential rallies held in each type of area, for each party. The table shows a relatively close match, providing assurance that the data used in this chapter is not skewed by sampling. All speeches were translated to English prior to coding.
